THINGS TO DO IN AND AROUND NERJA
NERJA
Nerja was originally named after the Moorish word naricha,
meaning rich in water. It is most famous for its beautiful
promenade, the 'Balcon de Europa'. and its many lovely
beaches. It is a lively, bustling town full of restaurants,
cafes, tapas bars, shops and boutiques, but perhaps
more than any other town on the Costa del Sol it has
retained its original charm. The local fishermen still
land their haul at the tiny Calahonda beach alongside
the Balcon.

CAVES of NERJA
One of the main attractions here in Nerja is the famous
Cuevas de Nerja. They have been declared a National
Historic & Artistic Monument of Spain and tours
are quite spectacular, revealing a number of caves paintings
from the Paleolithic period. The caves are not only breathtaking
they also have excellent acoustic qualities.A great
number of concerts are held there throughout the year.
If you are visiting in the high season it is well worth
booking ahead for both the tours and concerts, as the
Caves can get very busy.

ONE OF THE TOP TEN
SPANISH BEACHES
(The Observer Sunday January 12, 2003)
Las Alberquillas, near Nerja, Málaga
...Costa del Sol...the coastline near the pretty white-washed
village of Nerja, with its cobbled stones and tapas
bars, has some lovely quiet coves, including Las Alberquillas.
Surrounded by pine trees, bushes and greenery, this
beach is often deserted. Perhaps what makes it so quiet
is the difficult access, gained by a kilometre walk.
